What the free check does and doesn't show

The free DoT check covers licence status only: whether rego is current, when it expires, and the vehicle's description. It never reveals the owner's identity, and it won't tell you if the car has money owing, is a repairable write-off or is reported stolen — that lives in the national PPSR register ($2 official search). Buying privately? Free rego check first, PPSR second, and check the transfer steps before handing over money.

What rego costs in WA (2026/27)

Unlike the eastern states, WA charges rego by tare weight — $29.76 per 100 kg for a car, rounded up to the nearest 100 kg, plus a flat fee, the $9.70 recording fee and Motor Injury Insurance ($520.50 for a Class 1A car).
